It's easiest to figure out what swell and wind combinations work for the spot you are hoping to surf and leave everything else out until you have more experience. Remember that the heights listed are of open ocean swells and the size of actual wave faces may be much different. Judging the quality of surf is also difficult because what is good to one person may not be so great for someone else. Most of all be safe and here's some resources to get you started:
